"BARRAGAN was started in New York City in 2014 as an experiment in fashion trends, gender identity, and media consumption. The brand offers an alternative to mainstream fashion by reinterpreting basics in counter-intuitive, even surreal, ways. The brand not only produces fashion pieces but proposes a new lifestyle by incorporating art direction, styling, photography and media to convey a familiar yet alternate reality. In its clothing, BARRAGAN juxtaposes classic womens and menswear silhouettes, cut and pasted in new ways to create mis-matched yet congruent pieces. Basic staples such as the t-shirt and blue jean are re-imagined as skirts, halter tops, dress pants, work shirts, etc. Both women and menswear pieces are reworked to to fit both sexes creating a uniquely gendered, yet genderless collection of clothing.
Previous seasons have tackled themes such as the consumption of food as related
to fashion (Spring/Summer 2016), highlighting the transient and ephemeral nature
of both. Fall/Winter 2016 addressed Internet webcam culture by broadcasting the runway show live on the webcam site Cam4, and by styling different layers of dress and undress on the models. By questioning our contemporary ideas of what constitutes fashion, BARRAGAN pushes boundaries to incorporate larger issues such as gender politics, the influence of globalization, and the current speed of media consumption.
The brand is lead by Victor Barragan, with a team of eight people spanning both Mexico and the US. The clothing is designed in New York City and fabricated in Mexico City using the highest quality fabrics and materials. BARRAGAN pieces are currently stocked in countries across the globe, including stores in the USA, Mexico, Japan, and Australia."
